The costs of health care in the United States are astronomical, and the best way to be able to afford the care you need is to buy a quality health insurance plan. For millions of senior citizens and others, the most convenient and affordable way to receive this coverage is through Medicare.
Medicare recipients can receive critical medical care with the help of their plan, and therefore be able to afford to keep themselves healthy. However, even though Medicare is a government-run program, it still offers multiple private and publicly funded plan options that you can use to achieve a high level of personal protection.

When the Medicare program was started by the United States government more than 50 years ago, it was designed to help senior citizens who no longer qualify for benefits through an employer or retirement plan. At the time, only certain benefits were offered.
However, over the years, Medicare has grown considerably to offer a mix of both public and private health plan options for multiple demographics. Generally, you qualify for Medicare if you are:
Depending on these and other factors, the type of Medicare plan you qualify for might vary. However, there are many coverage options on the market, and each can provide you with exceptional benefits.
How many parts does Medicare have?
Within Medicare, there are four primary types of coverage and three distinct coverage options.
-
Original Medicare (Part A & Part B)
-
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
-
Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)
Original Medicare is the Medicare coverage that comes directly from the federal Medicare program. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans are private plan options, but you can use them if you want even more expansive coverage than your Original Medicare might provide.
Also called hospital coverage, Medicare Part A pays for the care you receive in a hospital, such as surgeries, IV treatments and other inpatient costs.
Every American qualifies for Part A coverage, and some even qualify to pay no premium on the plan. If you have paid the federal Medicare tax during your working life, then both you and your spouse can qualify for Part A coverage with a zero-dollar premium when you turn 65. If you are disabled or have ESRD, then your qualifications are a bit different, but you still might qualify for a zero-dollar premium.
Though optional, Medicare Part B is coverage designed for your everyday health care needs. It might pay for regular checkups, lab services, X-rays, vaccines and outpatient imaging and related services.
Part B coverage has an annual deductible and an annual premium that you must pay to receive coverage. However, Part B coverage is one of the keys that you must buy to be able to buy some of the more expansive coverage options like Part C and Part D.
Also called Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Part C is a private health insurance plan that provides Medicare benefits in addition to more expanded coverage options.
Under your Medicare Advantage plan, you will buy your coverage from a major insurer. Your plan offers Part A & Part B coverage and must meet standards set by the Medicare program. Additionally, your plan will offer other benefits, usually including:
-
Dental Insurance
-
Hearing Care
There are many different Medicare Advantage plans on the market, including HMOs, PPOs and Special Needs Plans. Therefore, certain plans are only available in certain areas, and only certain people qualify for Medicare Advantage.
Please note, you remain in the Original Medicare program even with an Advantage plan. You will have to pay both your Part B premium in addition to the premium on your Advantage plan. You must be enrolled in Part B coverage before you can enroll in Advantage coverage.
Original Medicare alone does not include prescription drug benefits. If you choose not to buy a Medicare Advantage plan, and instead want to stay with Original Medicare, then you can enroll in a prescription drug plan called Medicare Part D.
Part D plans are private plans, and each offers a unique set of benefits and formularies that will determine how much you will pay for your prescriptions. You cannot buy both a Medicare Advantage and a Part D plan at the same time.
